We were warned before the match kicked off that AK Graz would prove a particularly tough test for this new-look Liverpool side but with all due respect to the Austrian champions, Benitez's team could have been four goals up before Steven Gerrard secured a vital away goal midway through the first-half at the Arnold Schwarzenegger Stadium

 

The Liverpool captain, so close to leaving Anfield in the summer, scored a wonder goal after 23 minutes to stamp the visitor's authority on the game. When the ball fell to the skipper outside the area, Gerrard just rifled an unstoppable strike towards goal that gave Schranz absolutely no chance.

 

Djibril Cisse, making his full debut alongside Milan Baros in attack, looked Liverpool's most dangerous player in the first-half and immediately struck up a neat partnership with the Czech striker and Euro 2004 Golden Boot winner. Time after time the pair linked up well with Gerrard and Kewell to keep the home side on the back foot.

 

Sami Hyypia and Baros both went close with first-half headers and Gerrard had another wonderful strike disallowed in the second-half only for the captain to double his side's lead with just 11 minutes left after a low strike again gave the 'keeper little chance.

 

Liverpool will travel home with a clear advantage before the teams meet again at Anfield in two week's time. As Gerard Houllier used to say, we're only at half-time in this two-legged affair but tonight Rafael Benitez will be a happy man - his players, and his captain in particular, did him proud.
